BNB Smart Chain mainnet and testnet are separate networks. A testnet BNB balance cannot be spent by a mainnet swap merely because the wallet uses the same account address. The official BSC reference identifies mainnet as chain 56 and testnet as chain 97.
What changes when the network changes?
| Item | Mainnet | Testnet |
|---|---|---|
| Chain ID | 56 | 97 |
| Balance and history | Mainnet ledger | Independent test ledger |
| Purpose | Production transactions | Development and testing |
| Contract assumptions | Verify production deployment | Verify separate test deployment |
A test application can use familiar asset names and display a plausible exchange rate. That interface is a rehearsal environment, not evidence that those tokens are backed by production assets. Do not attach a real-world value to a test output simply by multiplying its quantity by a mainnet price.
Use a practice swap for the right questions
A testnet exercise can help explain account selection, signing order, token display and receipt inspection. It can also expose a configuration mistake before using production funds. It does not establish the price, liquidity, contract state or service availability of a later mainnet trade.
Before switching to mainnet, recheck every identity: chain ID, application deployment, input contract, output contract and recipient. Do not carry a copied testnet token address into a production token selector.
The same principle applies when following old examples. A tutorial can show a real contract interaction while explicitly targeting a test network. Its instructions illustrate a mechanism; its addresses and token balances belong to that environment.
