What BEP-20 tells you about a token

BEP-20 gives applications a common way to read and move token balances on BNB Smart Chain. It does not certify the token's economic value, reserve backing, issuer or ability to trade at a particular price. Those are separate questions even when a wallet displays the asset correctly.

The BNB Chain specification defines familiar operations such as reading a balance, transferring tokens, approving a spender and checking an allowance. A swap application can use this shared interface rather than inventing a completely different integration for each asset.

Interface compatibility is only the first layer

Imagine two hypothetical contracts that both expose a balance of 100 tokens. One represents an issuer-backed asset; the other is an unrelated community token. The wallet can display both through similar calls. That technical similarity tells you nothing about why a buyer would accept either token.

• Identity: the contract address and network determine which token balance is involved.
• Implementation: the actual contract determines any extra restrictions or transfer behavior.
• Market: available counterparties or pools determine whether a quote can execute.
• Claim: issuer or protocol terms determine whether holding the token confers any redemption right.

Native BNB is a separate balance

BNB itself is not simply another BEP-20 contract. BNB Chain's WBNB explanation distinguishes the native coin from its wrapped token form. Pools that need a common token interface can work with WBNB, while the network's fee accounting uses native BNB.

This distinction explains two common observations without changing the token standard: a wallet may hold a large BEP-20 balance while lacking transaction gas, and a receipt may contain WBNB movements inside a trade whose interface showed BNB. Read the asset and execution layers separately.
