Liquidity & price impact

Why total value locked does not tell you how much you can swap

Understand why headline liquidity value does not determine the output available for a particular trade size or direction.

Total value locked measures capital under a stated valuation method. Executable depth measures how much a particular trade can exchange within a stated price or cost limit. A large TVL number does not specify where that capital lies along the price curve.

Equal TVL, different execution

Imagine two hypothetical pools each reported at $1 million. Pool A concentrates much of its usable liquidity near the current exchange rate. Pool B places more capital in ranges far from that rate. A small swap can obtain better execution in A even though the headline capital totals match.

A larger swap may leave A's dense range and encounter thinner liquidity. Its earlier advantage therefore does not establish greater depth at every size. Uniswap v3's concentrated-liquidity design makes the distribution of capital relevant to execution, not merely the sum.

Diagnose high impact despite large TVL

Check whether the displayed total refers to the exact pool or an entire protocol. Then inspect active ranges, trade direction and the route's least liquid connecting pool. A token-wide or cross-network total can include capital unavailable to the selected transaction.

Also inspect valuation. A large holding of a token priced from a thin market can create a large dollar TVL without establishing that the holding can be exchanged near that reference price.

Measure capacity directly

Request comparable quotes at your intended size and a few neighboring sizes. Record output, separate costs and the pool or route used. If the question is “how much can be swapped within 1%,” define whether 1% means average execution shortfall or the movement of the pool's final marginal price. Those are different boundaries.

TVL remains useful context for capital scale. Use it alongside size-specific output, direction and liquidity distribution. A defensible comparison reports “capacity under this condition” rather than treating total deposited value as an amount that can be sold at the displayed price.
