Liquidity & price impact

How a token price move can change TVL without changing token counts

Show how marked token prices can change reported TVL while pool token quantities remain unchanged.

Dollar TVL can move because token prices change, even if no tokens enter or leave the pool. Separate quantity changes from valuation changes before interpreting a TVL chart as a liquidity flow.

A fixed-inventory example

Assume a hypothetical pool holds 10,000 units of A and 20,000 units of B. If A is marked at $2 and B at $1, reported value is $40,000. With the same balances but A marked at $3, reported value becomes $50,000.

The $10,000 increase is entirely a valuation change in this illustration. It does not show a $10,000 deposit or prove that a larger trade can execute within the same token-price band.

The valuation source matters

A thin-market reference can value a large balance at a rate that is not executable for the entire balance. A reserve ratio and an external market price also answer different questions.

Uniswap distinguishes local and average execution prices. Multiplying all holdings by a local or external reference does not transform them into an executable liquidation quote.

Decompose a reported change

Where data permits, preserve quantities at both observations and value them using one common price snapshot. That shows the change associated with holdings. Separately revalue the original quantities using the new prices to illustrate the mark-to-market contribution.

When both quantity and price move, different decomposition orders can create an interaction term. State the chosen convention rather than implying there is a unique attribution without assumptions.

For trade capacity, obtain size-specific quotes and range information. Dollar TVL remains a useful measure of marked capital scale, but an increase should not automatically be described as more deposited tokens, deeper local liquidity or lower swap impact. Name the measured change before drawing an execution conclusion.
