What does status 0 mean on a swap receipt?

Receipt status 0 means the EVM transaction’s top-level execution failed. It tells you the outcome, but it does not identify a single cause such as slippage, gas exhaustion or a blocked token transfer.

EIP-658 defines the field specifically for this success-or-failure result. A wallet’s wording may vary, but the chain receipt is the relevant execution evidence.

What you can conclude

• The transaction was included in a block rather than merely waiting in a wallet queue.
• The failed top-level execution did not commit its attempted state changes.
• Execution could still consume gas, so a fee can accompany the failed outcome.

REVERT semantics distinguish rollback from gas consumption. A revert can happen before the full gas limit is exhausted, so a partially used gas budget does not contradict failure.

What you still need

Look for a decoded error, the called contract, token contracts, input amount, deadline and gas-used information. An explorer may supply an explanation by replaying execution or decoding returned data. That extra explanation is not the status bit itself.

Also inspect nearby transactions. A prior approval may have succeeded, and a later retry may have completed. Status zero for one hash says nothing about whether you eventually traded using another hash.

For a support request, state “this hash has status zero” and include the chain. Avoid saying “the wallet lost my tokens” until you have reconciled balances and separate transactions. Precise evidence helps support identify the failed execution without guessing which step you mean.
