Why one pending transaction blocks later swaps

Ordinary EVM account transactions execute in nonce order. If an earlier nonce has not been consumed, later transactions from that account can remain queued even when their own fee bids look adequate.

The sequential counter is part of the Ethereum transaction model. A new high-fee swap does not automatically skip the missing position.

Find the head of the queue

1. Confirm the account and chain.
2. Identify the last confirmed outgoing nonce.
3. Compare it with pending transactions known to the wallet or explorer.
4. Locate the earliest unresolved nonce, including an old approval or transfer unrelated to this swap.

Multiple wallet applications using the same account can make the queue harder to see. A private transaction may also be absent from a public explorer’s pending view. The wallet that submitted it may have additional status information.

Work on the blocking transaction

If it remains a valid desired action, consider the supported speed-up flow. If you no longer want it, investigate cancellation. MetaMask’s cancellation guidance emphasizes resolving the oldest pending transaction in sequence.

After the gap clears, later queued swaps may become eligible quickly. Review those pending instructions too: their quotes may be stale or their deadlines expired. Resolving the first nonce is not a guarantee that every queued swap remains appropriate.

Avoid sending arbitrary self-transfers with guessed nonces. A mistaken choice can replace the wrong action or introduce another unresolved entry. Keep a concise list of nonce, hash, intended action and current status.
