Fees & trade costs

How much can you swap while keeping a separate gas reserve?

Solve a swap budget that preserves native tokens for execution and distinguish the estimated charge from the spending reserve.

When the input asset also pays network fees, the maximum swap amount must leave enough of that asset for the transaction's funding requirements. A wallet balance is not automatically the amount available to send into the swap.

A native-asset budget

Assume a hypothetical wallet holds 0.050 native tokens. The intended transaction needs a maximum network-fee reserve of 0.0012 tokens, and the user chooses to retain another 0.0008 for later operations. Before any other charges, the swap input budget is 0.050 − 0.0012 − 0.0008 = 0.048 tokens.

If the actual fee ends up at 0.0009, the unspent balance after the 0.048 swap is 0.0011. That result does not mean the initial reserve was itself a fee; part of it was never spent.

A separate input token changes the arithmetic

When the swap input is another token, gas generally comes from a distinct balance unless an explicit sponsorship or alternative-payment arrangement applies. Owning $1,000 of the input token does not automatically satisfy a native-fee requirement.

The Ethereum gas documentation explains native-asset payment and the distinction between gas limits and consumption. Other networks and account types can expose different funding arrangements, so use the actual transaction review.

Count preparation before execution

A paid approval or account setup can reduce the gas balance before the swap occurs. Budget for the sequence, not just the final transaction. If the balance barely covers an estimate, distinguish that estimate from any maximum amount required for acceptance.

This is a budgeting calculation rather than a universal reserve recommendation. The appropriate retained balance depends on the operations planned and their live estimates. State the intended reserve explicitly, then obtain the swap quote for the resulting input amount; reducing input can itself change the quote and route.
