Fees & trade costs

When fixed transaction costs dominate a small swap

Calculate how a fixed transaction charge changes the economics of small swaps and identify the size at which it meets your budget.

A fixed charge consumes a larger fraction of a smaller trade. If execution costs $1 regardless of whether you swap $20 or $200, that charge represents 5% or 0.5% respectively. This is a cost ratio, not a claim that the larger trade has a better exchange rate.

Separate fixed and size-dependent costs

Use a hypothetical model with a $0.80 transaction charge and a 0.20% proportional deduction. Before price impact, a $20 trade costs $0.84, or 4.20%; a $200 trade costs $1.20, or 0.60%. At $2,000, the model produces $4.80, or 0.24%.

Those figures assume the transaction charge stays fixed across sizes. In practice, a larger trade can use a different route and consume different resources. Ethereum measures gas by computational work, rather than charging a universal dollar amount per swap.

Solve a stated budget

If your chosen ceiling is 1% total cost, the model requires:

0.80 / trade_value + 0.002 ≤ 0.01

trade_value ≥ 0.80 / 0.008 = 100

The $100 threshold applies only to these assumptions. It does not include impact, adverse execution changes or an additional approval. Including a $0.40 setup transaction raises the corresponding threshold to $150.

Why simply increasing size is incomplete

Fixed-cost dilution improves as size rises, but liquidity-related costs can worsen. A trade-size decision therefore needs both sides of the calculation. Compare quotes at plausible sizes and retain the actual network estimate for each quote.

Combining several intended trades may reduce repeated fixed charges, yet it also changes timing and market exposure. Report that trade-off instead of treating a larger order as a guaranteed saving. The useful output is a size-specific cost budget, not a universal minimum amount that everyone should trade.
